The Elizabeth House Maternity Home was born in Bryan/College Station as a direct result of the Planned Parenthood abortion facility being shut down here in Aggieland. Local Christians, energized by the victory over the abortion giant, quickly organized to form a maternity home. That’s how we locals view the Elizabeth House. It’s a visible reminder of the power of God working through ordinary people in our community to accomplish big things. God continues to transform the hearts and lives of mothers and their children - born and unborn - through the hearts and hands of staff and volunteers every day!
Since that time of explosive growth, our board and staff have worked hard to channel the high energy stage of a new organization that was just learning to take its unwieldy first steps - guiding it forward to next stage of maturity - to achieve the long term goal of always being ready to help mothers who are in crisis to create a better life for themselves and their children.
Real transformation - lasting change - is hard work. It’s not glamorous and it’s literally invisible to a world that puts emphasis on instant results and quick fixes. But that is exactly what we’ve been working on at Elizabeth House this year.
Our team has fine-tuned our Five Pillars of Success that help our mothers grow as a person, a mother, and a child of God. Upon move in, each mother works with a Program Director to set personalized goals pertaining to each of the five Elizabeth House Maternity Home Pillars of Success.
The five pillars are:
Not only have we strived to build a consistent yet personalized approach with our residents to help them build a better life, but our leadership team has itself taken and applied this philosophy of real change to the inner workings of the organization.
We created procedures and training to smooth the handoff to new leadership to encourage innovative ideas while laying a strong foundation. We’ve automated what could be automated to eliminate wasted time and money. We’ve worked out kinks in communication. We’ve improved our ability to match volunteers’ gifts and talents with jobs that serve the needs of each individual mom. We’ve searched for and discovered more existing community networks that can connect us with pregnant women in crisis and can provide a network of support for our moms as they journey towards independence.
And none too soon did we undertake this "foundation reinforcement!" Little did we know that in 2020 our organizational readiness and our team’s ability to turn on a dime would be tested to the max.
When coronavirus hit - we are proud to say - our team was ready and responded efficiently, boldly, and creatively. Rather than retreat, we charged forward! Volunteers brought groceries and toilet paper. Staff continued to conduct virtual room checks, meetings, and classes. And most beautiful of all, residents themselves, inspired by the outpouring of love toward them - from total strangers - sacrificed creatively and heroically for each other, overcoming daycare and other closures. Despite the obstacles, they graduated with record levels of financial savings.
Our moms are so grateful to have the Elizabeth House team praying for them, perceiving their needs before they did, sheltering them from chaos and moving them forward. It’s scary to think where they could have been without so many of you - working through Elizabeth House - as their neighbor. Thank you so much!
